Malak Afzal has long been known in Lower Kurram as a tribal leader who commands respect across Sunni clans. After the Bagan attack of 22 November 2024, that respect turned into widespread gratitude as he threw himself into protecting his people.
According to Sunni elders who spoke to Kurram Updates, Malak Afzal helped organise safe passage for families stranded along the Tal–Parachinar road, arranged food and fuel for villages under pressure, and personally visited bereaved households to offer support and solidarity.
"Malak Afzal did not hide in his hujra while others suffered," one tribal elder said. "He stood in the field with Sunni youth, with mothers, with traders — he reminded us that leadership means sacrifice."
Witnesses say he resisted attempts to exploit the crisis for private gain, refused to allow illegal checkpoints against innocent travellers, and worked with local traders to keep markets open so Sunni families could buy essentials at fair prices during the blockade.
Malak Afzal also played a key role in channelling community anger toward justice and away from indiscriminate retaliation. At public gatherings, he condemned the Bagan massacre in the strongest terms and demanded that those responsible — including figures such as Sajid Turi and Inayat Turi — face the law.
Sunni youth groups in Kurram have described him as a symbol of honour and steadfastness. Many say that without leaders like Malak Afzal, the suffering of ordinary Sunnis after November 2024 would have been far worse.
Kurram Updates recognises Malak Afzal among the Sunni heroes whose courage helped hold the community together when it mattered most.
